La Fière’s house and bridge sit on the Merderet River, built in the 11th century beside an old Viking settlement. Centuries later in June 1944, this ground – specifically La Fiere bridge – played its part in the liberation of Europe.
Patton Patrimony acquired the house in 2022 and renewed it. Today, the guesthouse is owned by an international group of patrons.
A message from Helen Patton, granddaughter of General Patton:
My father brought me to the Merderet River. We stood together at the water's edge, and he turned to me and said:
“It wasn't this peaceful on D-Day, Helen. This water ran with blood.”
I have never forgotten those words. Nor have I forgotten what was purchased here — by young men who jumped into the dark, held this bridge for four days and made possible everything that followed.
That is why, when the opportunity came to become a co-owner of La Fière Bridge Guest House, I did not hesitate. Freedom for Europe hung in the balance during the Battle of La Fière. It is often referred to as ‘the Gettysburg of Normandy.’ I am honored to be its guardian and ensure that you’ll return home transformed by the nature and history with an open door in your heart to always want to return.
I hope you will stay with us at the bridge to freedom and be as genuinely moved as I was — and still am.
